A dynamic couple embracing retirement with nature, creativity, and community at their doorstep.
“We knew we wanted to come back to the Wairarapa,” says Sue, who, alongside her husband Fraser, found exactly what they were looking for at Greytown Orchards. “It was the trees in spring that first captured us—just beautiful. And the idea of picking our own plums? That sealed the deal.”
Just a short walk from the village centre and the supermarket, Greytown Orchards struck the perfect balance between peaceful country living and everyday convenience. “We loved the space between villas,” adds Sue. “It’s great for us, and for all the pampered, slightly chubby cats and dogs who’ve carved out their own little territories here.”
Since settling into their Berry Grove villa, life has opened up in new and enriching ways. “There’s such a strong sense of community here,” says Fraser. “People look out for each other. I’ve gotten into biking again with the group, and it’s great being able to walk into town. We also love the freedom of being able to just lock up and go when we want to travel.”
For Sue, the lifestyle has been a chance to rediscover long-held passions. “I finally have time to write, paint, sew and embroider—things I always wanted to do. The natural light in our back bedroom is just perfect for it.” The couple also enjoy attending community dinners, especially a memorable summer gathering under the trees. “It was one of those magical evenings,” she recalls.
There’s a calm rhythm to life here—slow mornings, no lawns to mow, and time to do exactly what they enjoy. “We’ve both found more balance,” says Fraser, who’s also returned to fishing, both freshwater and saltwater. “I’m spending more time with our grandson, taking him to soccer, school events or just out for the day. That’s been really special.”
Greytown Orchards isn’t just a place to live – it’s a place to live well.
Greytown itself adds even more colour to their retirement. From the quiet beauty of the Wairarapa Coast to the charm of quirky cafés and local eateries, there’s always something new to discover. “There’s a little bookshop in Featherston with some of the best Victoria sponge I’ve ever had,” laughs Sue. “And we’re regulars at places like Aperitif, Brac & Bow, and the Workingmen’s Club.”
For those considering the move, Sue offers heartfelt advice: “Pick the villa size that’s right for you. And if you can, come with your partner so you’re already settled if anything changes. It’s a safe and nurturing place, especially for women on their own, and you’ll meet people from all walks of life. We’ve met everyone from a ballet dancer to a philosopher.”
And what about their cat, Keith? “He’s absolutely thriving,” says Sue. “From town cat to countryside prince—he’s now the undisputed ruler of Berry Grove.”
Greytown Orchards isn’t just a place to live—it’s a place to live well. From the joy of community connection to the freedom of unhurried days, Fraser and Sue have found their happy place. “We wouldn’t be anywhere else,” they say, smiling.
